About West Side Story...
Loosely based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story uses, as its modern equivalents for the Montagues and Capulets, the juvenile gangs of local whites (the Jets) and immigrant Puerto Ricans (the Sharks). The book is by Arthur Laurents with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.
The musical explores the rivalry between two teenage gangs of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The young protagonist, Anton ("Tony"), who belongs to the Jets, falls in love with Maria, the sister of the leader of the Sharks. The dark theme, sophisticated music, extended dance scenes, and focus on social problems marked a turning point in American musical theater.
